Reform
Short Term
After the trial had concluded, it didn't immediately hinder religion. Quite the contrary, the fundamentalists saw the trial as a call to arms, and they were eager to smite evolution into the ground. In the short-term, the fundamentalists actually made it much more difficult for teachers to inform their students about evolution (Cline). The book that John scopes taught evolution from was renamed, and all of the references about evolution were removed entirely. The fundamentalists were also successful in purging creation from the science classes; however, they were unable to implement creationism into the school curriculum (Cline). Because of the continuous oppression of evolution, many of the children who grew up in the 1920’s and 30’s grasped little knowledge about the concept, leaving them ill-prepared for the scientific advancements that would commence in the latter half of the 20th century. Long Term
After about 30 years since the trial, the catalyst that would finally get the ball rolling for science commenced; the space race. When the USSR launched the first satellite into outer space in 1957, it finally dawned upon the U.S. that they were lagging behind all the other countries in terms of technology. In response, the U.S. began a massive effort to improve what was being taught in science class in schools across the nation. This effort meant that the theory of evolution would finally be brought back to the U.S. school system (Cline).
